Afternoon Villa are obviously a different side to the one we played last season, they have a good away record we are on a roll. Who wins this one? Who knows? as long as we continue playing as we have been, we must be in with a chance of taking this.

I mentioned on the other thread I can see this being a real test. Villa, as mentioned, have won all their away games I think? They have been a good counter attacking team a bit like us.

Perhaps its also because 60 years of following West Ham causes me to believe good things never last. Mind you, I used to be in the West Side chicken run and even in that 85/86 season a few of us were saying "this wont last" as we coincidentally played a counter attracking style then too with those little balls over the top for Messrs McAvennie and Cottee. Even Steve "Wally" Walford played like a seasoned international that one season. :-)

Whatever the result , it will once again be about the level of performance. Losing happens even when you play ok so I think we could stomach it so long as we don't have one of those awful games where we don't turn up and we get a "dose of reality". Lets see / hope those "flaky" days are over as Moyes says?

Alf - ah, happy days! I remember being very impressed with Steve Walford that year. A tilt at the title and a third place finish would be just what the doctor ordered, but yes, it's early days. But I have been surprised and impressed by this new-found resilience we're showing. I'm a bit more optimistic than you, but hey, that's not difficult!

Play as well as we have at our best this season, and we win. Play as badly as we have at our worst, we lose.

We'll probably play somewhere in between, and then any result is possible (in terms of points - we won't get slaughtered).

We are a team good at winning 'must-win' games and poor at winning 'nice to win' ones.
This could really be a defining match after which we will know whether to best look up or down the table.

If we win we go 5th, if Villa win they go 4th but given the confirmed flakeyness of both teams it's closer to a relegation 6 pointer.
